If you’re suffering from hot flashes due to menopause it is highly likely you will eventually experience the familiar feeling of flushed skin, profuse sweating, and the desire to strip off every garment you are wearing right in public.  The signs of a hot flash are unmistakable even to the observer so this can be an embarrassing event.

While there is no sure way to prevent a hot flash from occurring when and where it will occur there are some things you can tell yourself to try to make the discomfort better, at least mentally. After all, hot flashes during menopause are facts of life for thousands of women, so you are not alone!

The best thing to do is try to cut down the number and severity of hot flashes so that you don’t have to deal with it in the first place. There are things you can do to possibly cut down on hot flashes and their intensity:

Eat Soy Products

Soy contains plant estrogens which can help increase your estrogen levels which some studies have shown reduce the number and severity of hot flashes. There are some drawbacks to soy products as well, so check all your options and try to consume high quality soy products.

Eat More Fiber

Studies have shown that eating more fiber can lesson your risk of more than just colon cancer but also some breast cancers which is a concern when ingesting estrogens whether plant based or hormone replacement therapy. Some women have had some great results eating Flaxseed. You can add this to many foods you already enjoy so it’s easy to add to your diet.

If incorporating these ideas into your life do not help with the hot flashes the other thing that you can and should do, and this works with all sorts of embarrassing situations:

Find The Humor

Making a joke and heading for the nearest cold place will do much to relieve the embarrassment you might be feeling. Remember that you’re not alone in this experience and it is just part of life. As women, our bodies are amazing, wonderful and powerful. If we celebrate the sheer powerfulness of our bodies and laugh, we’ll feel better almost instantly.

A common nightmare is that I am incapacitated in some way and no one plucks that one chin hair that seemingly grows two inches long over night. (Remember the first time you saw an old lady with a chin hair? That old lady is you.) :)

After years of plucking (ouch!) I no longer need to worry about my eyebrows, they’re almost gone, but now they’re growing on my chin.

“I refuse to think of them as chin hairs. I think of them as stray eyebrows.”  Janette Barber
