If you’re feeling bored in your current career don’t think you’re stuck doing the same thing forever. You’re not. Sure, you have responsibility, and you have to provide for your family, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck forever in a career that doesn’t work for you anymore. You might not be able to afford to simply quit, and start over, but there are things you can do to start the transition to making a later in life career change.

Plan – Create a plan of action with measurable steps to take to get closer and closer to your career change so that you’ll be completely ready to make the jump when the offers start rolling in. Making a plan helps you determine realistically how to make your dream happen. It will answer what you have, what’s missing, what you can get, and fill in all the blanks to get you on your way to a brand new career.

Make Connections – Connect with people who are doing what you want to do or who work at the company you’d like to work for. You can do this easily today via Facebook Pages, Twitter, and also LinkedIn.com. It’s easier than ever to connect with people you want to connect with. When making these connections project a professional, capable image just in case someone with hiring authority is watching.

Get Educated – Today, in addition to making connections online you can go to college online. Whether you want to get an associates, a bachelors, a masters, or a doctorate it’s completely possible to do it online at an accredited school. Some studies are suggestion that online education is superior to in person education so don’t nix it. You do have to be super motivated and organized to succeed. Check your local and state schools before opting for a private school to save money on tuition.

Volunteer – If you already have the skills and education but not the experience but want to break in consider volunteering your time doing what it is that you want to do so that you can develop experience. Many organizations use volunteers to get work done. Some companies use unpaid interns, it doesn’t hurt to ask either. But, don’t give it away free forever; parlay your work into a paid position ASAP.
